Breastfeeding Women: Nonhormonal Methods

All nonhormonal contraceptive methods can
be used safely by breastfeeding women

  • No interference with breastfeeding
  • No effect on the quality or quantity of breastmilk
  • No effect on infant growth and development

All nonhormonal methods can be used safely by breastfeeding women.

They do not:

  • interfere with a woman’s ability to breastfeed,
  • affect the quality or quantity of breastmilk, or
  • affect infant growth and development.

Now, let us discuss types of nonhormonal contraceptive methods: lactational amenorrhea method (or LAM), barrier methods, intrauterine devices (or IUDs), periodic abstinence, withdrawal and female and male sterilization.
