The purpose of this presentation is to familiarize providers
of family planning and maternal and child health (FP/MCH) with
basic STD concepts. The presentation is divided into three sections.
The first section contains general introductory information
about the STD global epidemic. The second section contains information
about STD prevention. The last section covers STD management
issues.
Section I: STDs: An Overview
Section I introduces the subject of STDs. It describes the
scope of the STD problem globally and reviews the consequences
of STDs. It discusses public health strategies and program level
activities for preventing and managing STDs.
Section II: STD Prevention
Section II discusses STD prevention activities that all FP/MCH
services can provide.
Section III: STD Management
Section III describes approaches to the diagnosis and treatment
of STDs, focusing on the syndromic management approach.
Depending upon the background and needs of your audience, you
may decide to use some or all of the PowerPoint slides or supplement
them with information relevant to your local situation.
At the beginning of the presentation, inform your audience
about the organization of your presentation and how you would
like to structure the discussion (i.e., take questions during
the presentation or wait until the end). If you plan to include
participatory activities, make sure your audience is aware of
this. Depending on how much information you decide to use, you
may want to break the presentation into two or more sessions.
In its entirety, the presentation takes approximately 90 to
120 minutes to complete.
