Reproductive health is an evolving, dynamic and ever-changing
subject. To offer high quality services and care, policy-makers,
administrators and providers of services need to remain abreast
of current information and practices. Unfortunately, there exists
a significant gap between the information available to workers
in the field of STDs and those in FP/MCH. The purpose of this
module is to help close that gap by providing current information
to FP/MCH policy-makers, managers and health-care providers.
The module provides a core of information that can be adapted
as needed for various audience members.
The first section of this module provides information that will
help audience members:
- explain what STDs are and the magnitude of their impact
- discuss effective strateties for STD management on the public
health level
- describe STD control activities that can be implemented
at the program level.
The second section of the module provides information that
will help audience members:
- discuss the importance of incorporating STD prevention services
into FP/MCH programs
- explain the importance of counseling and condom promotion
in STD prevention
- explain the significance of STD prevention when discussing
contraceptive choice with clients.
The third section of the module provides information that will
help audience members:
- identify different approaches to STD management
- explain the syndromic management approach, including its
advantages and limitations
- discuss possible algorithms for four common treatable syndromes
(genital ulcer, urethral discharge, vaginal discharge and
lower abdominal pain), and ways to adapt these algorithms
to local situations.
