Whenever possible, clients should be given their preferred
method. Studies have shown that providing preferred methods
results in higher continuation rates and greater client satisfaction.
A study in Indonesia among nearly 2,000 women found that when
women did NOT receive the method they preferred, discontinuation
rates were eight times higher, compared to those who received
their preferred method. Among the 1,679 women who were granted
their method choice, only 9 percent discontinued. Among the
266 women who were denied their choice, 72 percent discontinued.
A study among 11,000 women in six countries also found that
a key factor in method continuation was obtaining the method
the woman had intended to use before coming to the clinic. The
study was conducted in Guatemala, Hong Kong, Jordan, Kenya,
Trinidad and Tobago, and Nepal.
