Communication Skills

Effective communication helps clients feel more comfortable talking about needs

  • active listening (both nonverbal and verbal)
  • ability to use simple language

The importance of effective communication between the provider and client cannot be overemphasized. Providers need good communication skills to encourage clients to feel comfortable talking about and exploring their needs.

The next several slides discuss specific communication skills needed by providers. These skills include active listening skills, which are both nonverbal and verbal, as well as the ability to explain technical information using simple language and avoiding medical terminology.
