Informed and voluntary choice is the foundation of effective family planning counseling. Well-informed clients who voluntarily choose a method that meets their needs are more likely to be satisfied and to continue using a family planning method.

To be informed, clients need to have clear, accurate and specific information. This will help them make decisions about their reproductive health, including choice of contraception. Clients also need to be able to understand clearly their own reproductive health needs and preferences.

To make a choice, a client needs to have a range of method options. Clients need to be encouraged to make their own decisions and not be pressured to make a particular choice.
