Client-Provider Interaction: Family Planning Counseling

The purpose of this training module is to help providers become more aware of the importance of client-provider interactions, especially family planning counseling.

Depending on the amount of time available and the needs of the audience, this module can be used in several ways. The module includes electronic copies of slides and a suggested narrative. Throughout the narrative there are suggestions for discussion questions and activities.

Items found on activity pages in the Self-Study Contents section correspond to the slide activities in Presenter Notes found in the Presenter Tools section. They contain activities and discussion questions that you may wish to use with your audience. Including some or all of these elements can help your presentation become more interactive, enhancing the learning process. In some cases when activities are used, you may find that slides covering the same material may be omitted.

Whether or not you include the participatory activities, be sure to familiarize yourself with the contents prior to your presentation.

At the beginning of the presentation, inform your audience about the organization of your presentation and how you would like to structure the discussion (i.e., take questions during the presentation or wait until the end). If you plan to include participatory activities, make sure your audience is aware of this. Depending on how much information you decide to use, you may want to break the presentation into two or more sessions. Without using any discussion questions or activities, the presentation takes an hour to complete. When all of the slides, discussion questions and activities are used, the presentation will last approximately three to four hours.
