Client-Provider Interaction: Family Planning Counseling

Learning Goals

Contraceptive technology is an evolving, dynamic and ever-changing subject. To offer high-quality services and care, policy-makers, administrators and providers of contraceptive services need to remain abreast of current information and practices. Unfortunately, there exists a significant gap between knowledge gained through research and the application of those findings in everyday practice. The purpose of this module is to help close that gap by providing current information to policy-makers, managers and health-care providers. The module provides a core of information that can be adapted as needed for various audiences.

The learning objectives for this module will be different depending on the methodological approach chosen for your audience.

1. Objective for presentations using slides and narrative only:

  • Participants will become more aware of the importance of client- provider interaction, especially family planning counseling.

2. Objectives for presentations using slides and the suggested discussion questions and activities only:

  • Participants will discuss the elements of client-provider interaction focusing on the content, communication skills and stages of good family planning counseling.
  • Participants will identify elements and techniques of good family planning counseling and interpersonal communication skills.

3. Objectives for presentations using slides, discussion questions and
activities, followed by the more extensive optional activities:
