Many types of programs provide barrier methods, and the number
has expanded greatly, especially for the male condom.
- Family planning programs can provide all barrier methods
at clinics, including diaphragms and cervical caps, and are
increasingly distributing condoms and, to a lesser extent,
spermicides through community-based family planning services.
- Family planning and AIDS prevention projects also distribute
condoms through different community programs that utilize
alternative outlets, such as markets, hotels, bars, restaurants,
the workplace and entertainment events.
- STD clinics promote and distribute condoms after treating
patients.
- Programs working with youth are distributing condoms as
part of teenage pregnancy and STD/AIDS prevention campaigns.
This includes school-based programs in some countries.
- The private/commercial sector increasingly markets condoms
and, to a lesser extent, spermicides in many “over the
counter” locations such as pharmacies, retail shops and
vending machines.
