Many studies have shown that male condom use decreases the
risk of HIV transmission. The study shown on this slide measured
the protective effect of condom use among commercial sex workers
in relation to how consistently they used condoms. Those who
did not use condoms at all had a high percentage of HIV infection.
The percent of infection decreased as condom use increased.
Those who used condoms 100 percent of the time had no HIV infection.
Other studies show similar patterns. The level of protection
against HIV is due to the degree of consistent and correct condom
use, rather than to variations among the condoms themselves.
To be most effective at disease prevention, condoms must be
used consistently and correctly.
