Barrier methods have some characteristics that may be weaknesses
or drawbacks for some users. They may not be as effective as
other methods. This is primarily due to the fact that some people
find them difficult to use consistently and correctly. They
should be used with every act of intercourse and, therefore,
require substantial motivation for consistent and correct use.
They also require partner participation and communication. Some
people are concerned that use of barrier methods interrupts
sexual activity. In some cultures there may be other obstacles,
such as taboos on touching ones own genitalia. Proper
storage is important to maintain the quality of the products,
and a source of resupply is necessary. Barrier methods may also
be expensive in some settings, compared to other methods.
