Contraceptive technology is an evolving, dynamic and ever-changing
subject. To offer high quality services and care, policy-makers,
administrators and providers of contraceptive services need
to remain abreast of current information and practices. Unfortunately,
there exists a significant gap between knowledge gained through
research and the application of those findings in everyday practice.
The purpose of this module is to help close that gap by providing
current information to policy-makers, managers and health-care
providers. The module provides a core of information that can
be adapted as needed for various readers.
This module provides some basic information that will help policy-
makers to:
- gain familiarity with conclusions from current research
regarding
barrier methods
- review existing guidelines on contraception and initiate
revisions or
updates
- establish appropriate family planning policies and service
delivery
guidelines.
The information provided in the module will also help supervisors
and clinic managers of family planning services to:
- extend their knowledge of current research and practices
regarding barrier methods
- informally teach and guide other providers of family planning
services in the provision of barrier methods
- identify obstacles to barrier method use that are due to
out-of-date medical beliefs and practices
- examine and improve the quality of contraceptive care for
couples choosing barrier methods.
More specifically, readers who provide direct client services
will be able to:
- describe the key issues surrounding the use of barrier methods,
as well as the specific characteristics
- identify the criteria for advising use and discontinuation
of barrier methods
- help clients manage the use of a barrier method.
