Family Health International (FHI) is implementing the Aastha (“To care about”) project in Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra as part of the India AIDS Initiative (Avahan) of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project aims to reduce the incidence of HIV/STIs among sex workers (SWs) and their partners through strategic behavior communication (SBC), condom provision and sexually transmitted infections (STI) services.
As the coverage of the project increased, there was a need to increase the capacity of the outreach team to reach out to maximum number of key population (KP). This necessitated a change in the roles and responsibilities of the outreach team. To build the capacity of the peer educators (PEs) to take over the responsibility of conducting one-to-one and one-to-group sessions independently while ORWs were trained to supervise, mentor and guide them to analyze their reach and coverage through data analysis and focus on areas that need attention.
This manual aims to enhance capacities of PEs to effectively conduct SBC sessions and provide Aastha project services to all the registered active KPs. This manual provides a quick reference to the principles and processes of interpersonal communication and micro planning skills. It is intended to help PEs work together with the ORWs to provide the best possible services for the KP.
The manual includes many interactive methods and exercises for demonstration. During its development, suggestions and practical experiences from project functionaries, project implementers including the Family Planning Association (FPA) India and Society for Services to Voluntary Agency (SOSVA) were incorporated in the manual. Technical assistance for its preparation was received from Sr. Technical Officer FHI, Asia Pacific Regional Officers (APRO).
The manual has been field-tested and has been used to train 1028 PEs in interpersonal communication and micro planning skills under Aastha project. |
