Help Recover in Storm-Devastated Haiti

Four major storms have hit the small island nation of Haiti so far this hurricane season, leaving more than 750 dead and destroying or damaging 55,000 homes, according to the Haitian government.
In recent years, those of us living in the United States have become increasingly familiar with the devastation caused by hurricanes. In poor countries like Haiti, the recovery process is even more challenging. Haiti already suffers from extreme poverty and has been hard hit by the global food crisis. Most Haitians subsist on less then $2 a day.
Due to FHI’s long history of working with families in Haiti, it was asked at the 2008 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting to help speed recovery for children and families in communities most affected by the storms. FHI is helping those impacted by the recent hurricanes in Haiti by:
  • Building 1,000 small houses for homeless families
  • Feeding 1,000 families for six months
  • Providing 500 hospital beds and other medical equipment to Haiti’s main hospital
