Family Health International (FHI) has both designed and developed new condoms, and since 1991, has performed quality control evaluations all condoms (and other contraceptives) procured by USAID and many other donor organizations. FHI has assessed the safety, efficacy, and acceptability of existing condoms including evaluating rates of condom breakage and slippage. Additionally, we have conducted research and programs in Latin America, Asia, and Africa seeking ways to promote condom use as part of the ABC (abstinence, being faithful, using condoms) approach to HIV prevention.  Male and female condoms provide protection against pregnancy and significantly lower users' risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. To be effective, they must be used consistently and correctly. Among experienced users, condom breakage or slippage is very rare. Among the majority of users, breakage rates are less than five percent. In fact, research has found that most condom "failure" is due to inconsistent or incorrect use.
