When her CD-4 count rose too high, she found it difficult to walk the 3 kilometers to school. Then, she was found by FHI/India's Balasahyoga program, which now helps her get proper nutrition, ARV treatment, and a bike to get to school on.

Helping Children Grow to Be Healthy, Confident Adults
MARCH 2009 — Through the Salaam Baalak Trust, Nasrin, now 18, left her adoptive family, which lived on the street. She has received facilities and training related to health, nourishment, education, clothing, counseling, psychosocial support, and life-skills education. She also has completed a diploma in computer training.

FHI Implements Four Projects Funded by Grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Aastha Project Cited as Model
The FHI-implemented Aastha Project was cited as a model by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto. The foundation recognized the project's innovative approaches to the challenge of reducing the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections for sex workers in the Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra.

FHI Supports Research on Antiretroviral Therapy in India
As the coordinating and operations center for the National Institutes of Health-funded HIV Prevention Trials Network, FHI is providing expertise in site assessment, study design, protocol development, and staff training for a study on the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy in preventing transmission of HIV in couples in which only one partner is infected.
Expanding Contraceptive Options for Indian Couples
To expand the number of contraceptive options available to women and couples, we are studying the factors that lead women to adopt or reject Depo Provera, an injectable contraceptive, as a family planning method. We are also promoting Depo use among women who desire a long-acting method and for whom injectable contraceptives are safe and appropriate.

Aastha Strategic Behavioral Communication Manual
JUNE 2009 — The Aastha ("to care about") program is designed to reduce the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among sex workers and their partners through strategic behavioral communication (SBC) and other interventions. This manual provides material for 11 interactive SBC sessions and is aimed at key populations such as bar girls and home-based, transgendered, and male sex workers for whom specific SBC material was not previously available. The manual presents the information in interesting ways to facilitate behavior change and is designed to encourage dialogue between the sex workers and peer educators. Aastha is part of the Ahavan India AIDS Initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

FHI/India Supportive Supervision Training Manual Now Online
FEBRUARY 2009 — A new manual now online is being used to train the outreach workers who are key to the success of the FHI-managed Aastha Project of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra. With this training, the outreach workers can more ably manage and provide supportive supervision for peer educators engaged in reducing the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among sex workers and their partners.
