Youth Peer Education Toolkit

The Youth Peer Education Toolkit is a group of resources designed to help program managers and master trainers of peer educators. Collectively, these tools should help develop and maintain more effective peer education programs. The five parts of the toolkit are based on research and evidence from the field as well as local examples and experiences. They are designed to be adapted locally as needed. The toolkit resulted from a collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Family Health International. It was produced for the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA.  

I. The Training of Trainers Manual is a curriculum tool to prepare master-level peer education trainers. The manual uses participatory techniques based on a variety of theoretical frameworks to ensure that future trainers are skilled and confident in their abilities to train peer educators and serve as informed resources for their peers.

II. Standards for Peer Education Programmes is an 80-page spiral manual that can help program managers standardize practices in peer education programs. It includes a checklist of 52 standards in five categories: planning, recruitment and retention, training and supervision, management and oversight, and monitoring and evaluation, with tips, lessons learned, and other information on each of the 52. A four-page version is also available for managers to take with them on site visits.

 

III. Theatre-Based Techniques for Youth Peer Education: A Training Manual is a 100-page training manual that provides an overview of using theater in health education. It contains four peer theater training workshops, a series of theater games and exercises that can be used in trainings, and information on developing and building a peer theater program.

 

IVPerformance Improvement: A Resource for Youth Peer Education Managers (PDF, 1.51 MB) is a tool that managers can use to improve the quality of their programs. It builds on quality improvement materials from other fields, providing a tool for self-assessment, group resolution, and action planning with sample activities from the field. Also included is a section on program management basics with common examples from peer education projects.

 

VAssessing the Quality of Youth Peer Education Programmes (PDF, 612 KB) is a series of checklists with guidance for program managers to use to assess a peer education program.
