Standards for Peer Education Programmes

cover shot

Standards for Peer Education Programmes (PDF, 1.24 MB) is a tool for managers to use to monitor and improve their program activities. Developed during a consultative meeting with peer educators, trainers, project managers, and technical experts from 22 countries, this tool provides a framework of standards for programs, as well as tips and examples from around the world. The tool includes a description of 52 recommended standards under five categories: planning, recruitment and retention, training and supervision, management and oversight, and M & E. This tool resulted from a collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Family Health International. It was produced for the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA.

Standards for Peer Education Programmes – Checklist (PDF, 122 KB) is a four-page summary of the 52 recommended standards, designed as an easy reference tool for managers to take with them for site visits and assistance during meetings.

The standards tool is divided into four sections:

1. Introduction and Overview. This discusses why peer education is important, issues in using standards in peer education, and how to use this guide.

2. Peer Education Standards Checklist. This section includes the 52 standards in the five categories, with a brief description of each. This section is reprinted in the separate checklist publication described above.

3. Peer Education Standards. This more lengthy section discusses each of the standards and provides tips and short lessons learned from field experiences about many of them.

4. Code of Ethics. This includes a discussion of 10 recommended elements of a code of ethics for peer education programs.

The annexes include a brief description of Y-PEER, a list of the participants at the consultation where this tool was developed, and an annotated list of peer education resources.

This standards tool is part of an expanded Youth Peer Education Toolkit sponsored by the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER) project. The toolkit also includes the following publications:

Unfortunately, we are out of hard copies for the Standards for Peer Education Programmes, the Training of Trainers Manual, and the Theatre-Based Techniques Manual, and there are no plans for reprinting at this time.
