From the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, these locally adaptable resources provide guidance to communities on supporting children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS. 7. Determining an Effective and Replicable Communication-Based Mechanism for Improving Young Couples' Access To and Use of Reproductive Health Information and Services in Nepal - An Operations Research Study (PDF, 2.5MB)
 
This paper summarizes the findings of a two-year operations research study by the Center for Research on Environment, Health and Population Activities (CREPHA). The study sought to increase access to and use of reproductive health services by young married couples in Nepal through community-based interventions.

9. Growing Up Global: The Changing Transitions to Adulthood in Developing Countries (PDF, 678K)
 
This pre-publication report summarizes a book that will be released in 2005 by the U.S. National Academies' National Research Council and Institute of Medicine. A panel of experts compiled the book, edited by Cynthia Lloyd of the Population Council. It is for purchase.

11. HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care among Especially Vulnerable Young People (PDF, 320K)
  
This collaboration between the WHO and the DFID-sponsored Safe Passages to Adulthood program focuses on the needs of especially vulnerable youth including migrants and refugees, sex workers, and injecting drug users.

12. Integrating Adolescent Livelihood Activities within a Reproductive Health Program for Urban Slum Dwellers in India (PDF, 2.1MB)
 
This report describes an Operation Research study being conducted by the FRONTIERS program and CARE India.  The document covers the feasibility and impact of including livelihood activities in a reproductive health project.  At midline, the study found positive changes in reproductive health knowledge, skill use, time use, gender roles, and aspirations.

13. A Multi-Sectoral Approach to Providing Reproductive Health Information and Services to Young People in Western Kenya: Kenya Adolescent Reproductive Health Project (PDF, 1.5MB)
  
This document summarizes the impact and cost of interventions in the community, schools, and health-care facilities with a goal of increasing reproductive health knowledge, delaying onset of sexual activity, and decreasing risky behaviors among sexually active youth. The Population Council, PATH, and the Government of Kenya collaborated on the project.

This 40-page report from Pathfinder International provides insights on project implementation challenges, focusing on the technical areas of youth-friendly services and institutional capacity building.  The project involved multiple international agencies working with local partners in four countries (Botswana, Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda).

16. Post-Abortion Care for Adolescents:  Results from Research in the Dominican Republic and Malawi (PDF, 516K)
 
With less access to medical services than adults, adolescents are more likely to face complications of abortion. This summary of studies in Malawi and the Dominican Republic discusses how hospitals can provide better post-abortion care to adolescents.

17. Protecting Young People from HIV and AIDS: The Role of Health Services (PDF, 736K)
 
This 40-page report is based on a consultation between WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and YouthNet and is aimed at policy-makers and programmers.  It outlines key health services activities and strategies in terms of information and counseling; the diagnosis, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS and STIs; and risk reduction.

18. Sexual Behavior of Adolescents in Contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa 
 
This collection of 10 essays on adolescent sexuality in Africa is organized into three themes: determinants of risky behavior; HIV, contraception, modernization, and sex; and kinship, nationality, and sexuality.  The essays address adolescent behavior in Cameroon, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia. This working paper from the POLICY Project reviews the international experience with sexuality education, including evidence-based findings, policy issues, and other critical concerns as they apply to one country. 20. State of the World's Children 2005 (English, French, Spanish)
 
The annual report from UNICEF focuses this year on poverty, conflict, and HIV/AIDS as a threat to the idea of childhood. Features cover issues important for adolescents, including free education for those orphaned by HIV/AIDS and fighting sexual exploitation and trafficking.

The International Save the Children Alliance prepared this report following a workshop in Nepal. It focuses on theories and experiences of working with men and boys in South and Central Asia to decrease gender-based violence and identifies gaps and opportunities for future action.
