YouthNet Releases Findings from Three New Youth Studies

YouthNet released findings from three new studies examining the health and behavior of young people, the Tanzania HIV/AIDS Indicator Survey, conducted by the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), the National Bureau of Statistics, and ORC Macro of the United States; the Ishi Youth Baseline Assessment, conducted by HealthScope/Tanzania and TACAIDS; and, the Iringa Youth Behavior Survey, conducted by the YouthNet project of Family Health International (FHI).

These three surveys reveal important information about the current status of young people in Tanzania, including their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HIV and reproductive and sexual health.  For example:

  • Tanzania HIV/AIDS Indicator Survey: Among sexually active youth aged 15-24 years, 81 percent of men and 37 percent of women engaged in risky sexual activity in the 12 months preceding the survey.
  • Ishi Youth Baseline Assessment: In an urban sample, the later the age of sexual debut of a young person, the more likely he or she was to use condoms consistently.
  • Iringa Youth Behavior Survey: Young people need more information about family planning and pregnancy prevention. In Iringa, fewer than 40 percent of youth respondents ages 13-24 could spontaneously name the male condom or oral contraceptives (pills) as methods to prevent pregnancy.
