Family Health International (FHI) conducted pivotal studies evaluating the contraceptive efficacy of natural family planning, as well as research documenting the effectiveness of the lactational amenorrhea method of family planning. FHI generates and shares evidence-based information, and has developed training materials for health providers and others on fertility awareness. Natural methods of family planning include periodic abstinence (standard days, calendar, or rhythm methods), withdrawal, and the use of prolonged breastfeeding to inhibit ovulation. Fertility awareness-based methods of family planning depend upon a woman identifying those days during each menstrual cycle when intercourse is most likely to result in a pregnancy. If a woman can identify her potentially fertile days, a couple can use this information to time intercourse either to avoid or achieve a pregnancy.
