Gender considerations are woven into every aspect of Family Health International's work. We have explored the effect of family planning on the lives of women in different settings, researched ways to increase male involvement in reproductive health programs, and worked with youth worldwide to foster healthy gender identities through the development of youth-friendly services. An awareness of gender issues is important for the effective conduct of research and programs on reproductive and sexual health, including HIV/AIDS. Social and cultural factors related to gender influence the extent to which women and men are able to make decisions affecting their health and the quality of their lives.
