As part of its global effort to improve the reproductive health of men and women, Family Health International works to prevent intimate partner violence through research, education, training, targeted intervention efforts, and technical assistance to country-level programs. Preventing intimate partner violence is an important public health priority, with special implications for organizations and individuals that focus on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Many women around the world experience intimate partner violence, also called domestic violence. Such violence is part of daily life and can lead to severe injuries and other health problems. For many, the threat or fear of violent behavior prevents them from protecting themselves adequately from pregnancy, abortion, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS.
