Family Health International (FHI) is a world leader in applied research on barrier contraception, including male and female condoms, dual protection, and microbicides. Barrier methods protect against pregnancy by providing a physical barrier between the sperm and the egg. They have also, in varying degrees, been shown to protect against some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Despite this dual-role advantage, some providers are hesitant to recommend them because these methods must be used correctly and at every act of intercourse to be effective. However, other than abstinence, male and female condoms are the only contraceptive methods that provide any protection against STIs and HIV.
