Instructions for use

There are four translation forms on the main FamPlan glossary start page:
  • English to Spanish
  • Spanish to English
  • English to French
  • French to English
To translate a term:
  1. Select the correct translation form.
  2. Enter the term you wish to translate in the text box.
  3. Click on the "Translate" button.
  4. A list of matching terms in the language you selected will appear on the following page.
Tip: Some short words will tend to bring up too many results. Longer words and phrases may match a number of different related words, such as "condom" and "male condom."

Organizational Preference:

Organizations that are members of the PHMWG have translations of terms that they prefer to use over other possible translations. Once a word is translated in FamPlan, the Organizational Preference field shows which groups prefer a particular translation. For example, FHI prefers to use the term condón instead of preservativo, both of which are Spanish translations of the English term condom. In the Organizational Preference field of condón, the phrase "fhi pref" will appear, denoting FHI's preference for that translation. The phrase "fhi syn" in the Organizational Preference field indicates that the translated term is an alternate synonym for the preferred term. Synonyms should be used as a secondary subsitute for a preferred term.

Gender

Most Spanish and French entries were assigned a gender, although some terms do not have a specified gender.  A term's gender, either (m) for masculine or (f) for feminine, is indicated in the Gender field.
