Collaboration has been a hallmark of the Women's Studies Project (WSP) at Family Health International (FHI). The Project's work, summarized in this report, would not have been possible without the diligent efforts of many individuals and organizations. In particular, the Project recognizes the contributions of the in-country investigators who performed the bulk of the research that provides the basis for this report.
The Project was funded through a Cooperative Agreement to Family Health International from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The WSP wishes to thank USAID for its support and the guidance offered by Project cognizant technical officers: Dr. Barbara Crane, Dr. Mary Ann Lemkeuhle, Dr. Mary Willis, Ms. Ellen Starbird, Dr. Jennifer Adams and Ms. Bessie Lee. The WSP also is indebted to Dr. Sawon Hong and Dr. Judith Seltzer, who played major roles in designing the WSP and who developed the initial conceptual framework for the Project. In addition, the WSP would like to thank Dr. Duff Gillespie who generated the idea of the Women's Studies Project.
The Project also thanks the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation. Support from these organizations made research possible in China.
In addition, the WSP is indebted to members of the international Technical Advisory Group, who guided research and dissemination efforts; members of the In-country Advisory Committees, who defined country research agendas, monitored the progress of research, and planned for dissemination of study results; in-country research teams who collected and analyzed the vast amount of data from this Project; and USAID Missions, which facilitated the Project's in-country work and provided field support. Individuals and organizations that contributed to the WSP are listed beginning on page vii of this report.
The WSP expresses its gratitude to FHI, which provided support for research in the Republic of Korea and for cost-sharing in various aspects of the Project, including dissemination and management. In addition, staff from many FHI divisions contributed to the Project by reviewing research proposals and final reports, traveling to the field to provide technical assistance to in-country colleagues, and contributing their skills to analyses of data. The WSP is especially grateful to current staff members Dr. Patricia Bailey, Ms. Donna McCarraher, Dr. Cynthia Waszak, Dr. Emelita Wong, Dr. Elizabeth Eggleston, Dr. Eilene Bisgrove, Ms. Cynthia Visness, Mr. Bill Conn, and Ms. Dorace Trottier for their field work and project monitoring. FHI staff members Dr. Laila Kafafi and Lic. Ren?ereira were valuable assets in FHI's Cairo and Bolivia offices. In addition, the WSP thanks former staff members who provided technical assistance and support: Dr. Karen Hardee, Ms. Liisa Ogburn, Dr. Arlene McKay, Ms. Susan Pfannenschmidt, Mrs. Cynthia Kay, Mr. Juan Carlos Reinoso, Ms. Alison Roxby and Ms. Meera Viswanathan.
The authors thank Dr. Nancy Williamson, Dr. Priscilla Ulin and Ms. JoAnn Lewis of FHI for their guidance in preparing this paper. The authors are especially grateful to the individuals who reviewed this paper and offered thoughtful comments: Ms. Kathy Hinson, Ms. Sarah Martin, Ms. Elizabeth Robinson, Dr. Patricia Bailey, Ms. Donna McCarraher, Dr. Cynthia Wazsak, Dr. Eilene Bisgrove, Ms. Jane Rosengren and Dr. Erin McNeill of FHI; Ms. Elizabeth Maguire, Dr. Jennifer Adams, Dr. Barbara Crane, Dr. Sarah Harbison, Dr. Karin Ringheim, Ms. Bessie Lee, Mr. Jeff Spieler and Ms. Ellen Starbird of USAID; Dr. Larry Severy and Dr. Pouru Bhiwandi of the WSP Technical Advisory Group; Dr. Cynthia Myntti; Ms. Judy Norsigian of the Boston Women's Health Book Collective; Ms. Lina Parikh of the Population Reference Bureau; and Dr. Karen Hardee of the POLICY Project, The Futures Group International.
And finally, the WSP would like to thank the women and men who agreed to participate in these studies. They shared both their time and their insights, and the Project owes them a debt of gratitude.
