Paulson S, Gisbert ME, Quiton M. Case Studies of Two Women's Health Projects in Bolivia:La Casa de la Mujer, Santa Cruz; CIDEM/Kumar Warmi, El Alto. Family Health International: Research Triangle Park. December 1996.
This case study, the second in a series on women-centered health programs prepared for FHI's Women's Studies Project, profiles two programs in Bolivia: La Casa de la Mujer in Santa Cruz and the Kumar Warmi (Health Woman) clinic operated by the Centro de Informacion y Desarrollo de la Mujer (CIDEM) in El Alto. Both programs involve women in the design and delivery of health care, and both offer health care as one of an array of services designed to improve women's quality of life. The La Casa program is action-oriented and works to empower women as individuals and to build solidarity among women from all classes of society. CIDEM's Kumar Warmi project works to transform health care through educational processes; it has a strong basis in gender theory.
The Women's Health Care Foundation seeks to expand women's health care services "beyond the womb." Established in 1980, the Foundation works to meet the diverse health needs of Philippine women throughout their life cycle, broadening services beyond the traditional maternal-child health programs to include services for adolescents and postmenopausal women; counseling on sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS; information on breast cancer screening and domestic violence; and information for couples seeking contraception as well as couples seeking counseling on infertility. The Foundation operates three health clinics, plus numerous community outreach programs. In addition, the Foundation is involved in advocacy efforts to promote improved reproductive health rights for women. This case study is the third in a three-part series on women-centered health programs.
