Following is the list of the collateral materials accompanying the training and reference guides, which have been assembled to help facilitators prepare their training sessions. These materials will also be useful when adapting the content for different audiences or participant groups. The source documents for the technical guidance and the training handouts, in PDF format, are printable. There are also PowerPoint presentations with speaker notes, as well as agendas and certificates in Microsoft Word, which are editable. Note: To edit a Word or PowerPoint document, or to view speaker notes, download the file and save it to your computer.

  1. Participant Agenda: This sample agenda may be adapted by the workshop presenter, printed and distributed to workshop participants. It provides a suggested schedule for a nine-hour combined training on all five checklists.
(Word document -- 2.56 MB or PDF -- 57 KB)
  1. Two PowerPoint presentations are provided to help orient different audiences on the checklists:
    • Presentation A (for facilitators): How to Use Screening Checklists to Initiate Use of Contraceptives
      (PowerPoint -- 2.95 MB or PDF -- 697 KB)

    • Presentation B (for policy-makers and program managers): How to Use Screening Checklists to Initiate Use of Contraceptives
      (PowerPoint -- 415 KB or PDF -- 539 KB)
  1. The following handouts can be used during the workshop:
    • Scenario Exercises for Participants
These scenarios are part of an exercise designed to help participants become comfortable using the provider checklists. They can be printed and distributed to participants during the third session of the training workshop.
(COC -- PDF, 84 KB; DMPA -- PDF, 80 KB; IUD -- PDF, 83 KB; Implant -- PDF, 82 KB; Pregnancy -- PDF, 90 KB)

    • Answer Guide to Scenarios
These handouts provide answers to all the scenarios. They can be printed ahead of time for distribution after workshop participants have completed the scenario exercises.
(COC -- PDF, 118 KB; DMPA -- PDF, 108 KB; IUD -- PDF, 116 KB; Implant -- PDF, 105 KB; Pregnancy -- PDF, 95 KB)

    • Quick Reference Chart
Produced by FHI, this chart is based on the World Health Organization's Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (2004, updated 2008). It serves as an "at-a-glance" job aid for providers as they determine whether clients with certain medical conditions may safely initiate or continue using COCs, DMPA, contraceptive implants, or the copper IUD.
(Blank Chart for Participant Exercise -- PDF, 468 KB, Answer Key)

    • Five Screening Checklists
Facilitators may print out any or all of the five checklists as needed for use by their participants during the training sessions.

    • Certificate of Attendance
This sample certificate can be adapted and printed for workshop participants to take home as a record of their successful participation and completion of the checklist training. (Word document -- 26 KB or PDF -- 51 KB)
  1. Electronic versions of five training and reference guides.
  1. Basic, essential, evidence-based information on COCs, DMPA, implants, and IUDs: The first four documents below will help service providers understand the criteria that formed the basis of the checklists. PowerPoint presentations C, D, E, and F provide brief overviews of COCs, injectables, the IUD, and implants and are designed to refresh or update service providers' knowledge of these contraceptive methods. PowerPoint presentation G addresses special issues that need to be considered when providing contraception to women living with HIV or AIDS.
