Microbicide Trials Network
This clinical trials network is dedicated to developing and evaluating an effective microbicide. Funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the network includes a core center of operations (supported by the University of Pittsburgh, FHI, and others) and 18 clinical research sites in seven countries. Most recently, the network conducted a Phase II trial in India and the United States showing that tenofovir gel is safe and acceptable for daily use. More information about the network and its trials is available here.
Microbicides Development Programme
Based in the United Kingdom, this partnership of organizations in Europe and Africa primarily conducts research to develop an effective vaginal microbicide. Its research includes studies to determine mechanisms of action for different products, preclinical evaluations of potential microbicides, and clinical trials of promising candidates. The partnership is currently conducting a Phase III trial of PRO 2000 gel in Africa. Learn more here.
International Partnership for Microbicides
This global collaboration between public- and private-sector organizations promotes the rapid development and availability of microbicides. The partnership also conducts its own research, focused on developing and testing antiretroviral-based microbicides such as dapivirine gel. Learn about the partnership's clinical trials and how it supports access to future microbicides here.
Alliance for Microbicide Development
This nonprofit organization is composed of representatives of more than 200 biopharmaceutical companies, research organizations, and advocacy groups dedicated to accelerating the development of a safe, effective, and affordable microbicide. One of its many activities is to monitor and analyze the current pipeline of microbicide candidates. View more about the alliance here, including an up-to-date database of information on microbicide research and development.
Global Campaign for Microbicides
This network of more than 285 nongovernmental organizations uses international advocacy, policy analysis, and social science research to build support for microbicides and other HIV-prevention options for women. The campaign's regional activities include raising awareness of microbicides and protecting the needs and interests of trial participants and other potential users. Find out about the campaign's work here.
