About CICCR
In 1995, the Consortium for Industrial Collaboration in Contraceptive Research (CICCR) was initiated by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation at the Contraceptive Research and Development (CONRAD) Program to foster the development of new contraceptives in three areas:
- male methods;
- vaginal methods that prevent pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases, including the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); and
- monthly regimens, which could be postcoital, anti-implantation, or menses inducers.
CICCR is now supported by five foundations and the United Nations Population Fund, and awards grants for contraceptive research and development to not-for-profit research institutions working in collaboration with for-profit industrial partners. Collaboration between the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors is central to all fields of pharmaceutical research and development, but it is particularly important in the contraceptive and reproductive health areas because there are only a few companies active in this area.
