A 2004 pilot study conducted by the Uganda Ministry of Health in collaboration with Family Health International (FHI) and Save the Children USA demonstrated that, with proper training and supervision, community health worker (CHW) distribution of the injectable contraceptive depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) in a rural Ugandan district is safe, feasible and acceptable. The project, Promoting DMPA Provision by Community Health Workers, is intended to scale up these research findings. To this end, a workshop was held October 5, 2006 in Kampala, inviting stakeholders to share best practices and lessons learned, as well as provide input on the project. These proceedings give highlights of the presentations and discussions, including next steps for scale up and advocacy.
