Review Highlights Benefits of Latex Condoms Over Nonlatex Varieties

Latex condoms break less often than their nonlatex counterparts and are also likely to be more effective in preventing pregnancy, confirms an updated research review published by Family Health International in the Cochrane Library.

The authors of the review evaluated data from 11 randomized controlled trials comparing latex condoms with nonlatex condoms in terms of contraceptive effectiveness, breakage and slippage, safety, and user preferences.

Another important message that emerged from the research is that despite the differences between the two types of condoms, nonlatex condoms may be more popular and can still be considered a safe alternative among men and women who have allergies to latex, have sensitivities to latex, or for other reasons cannot use latex condoms consistently.
