Over-the-counter provision of oral contraceptives by pharmacists is a safe, effective, and practical way to distribute this popular contraceptive method in Jamaica, according to research published in the journal Studies in Family Planning. Conducted by Family Health International, the research showed that a sample of Jamaican pharmacists denied access to most women who had contraindications to pill use and that most clients—the majority of whom were continuing users rather than new users—were generally knowledgeable about proper pill use, regardless of where they obtained their information. The pharmacists were rarely the source of their adequate information about pill use, however. To improve clients' specific knowledge of pill use, especially concerning what to do if more than one pill is missed in a row, pill-taking instructions could be included in pill packages or in a separate pamphlet that pharmacists could give to clients.
