Program Research for Strengthening Services (PROGRESS) focuses on family planning and reproductive health services, with an emphasis on improving their quality, increasing demand for them, and streamlining access to them.

The Contraceptive and Reproductive Health Technologies Research and Utilization (CRTU) program is a five-year, USAID-sponsored assistance agreement (2005-2010) with Family Health International. Through the CRTU program, FHI works with USAID, its missions, and other partners to expand the range and support the use and availability of safe, effective, acceptable, and affordable technologies that prevent unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Microbicides research: FHI is a leader in the international search for a topical microbicide to protect against STIs, including HIV.

FHI's focus on youth: FHI provides global technical leadership in addressing the critical reproductive health needs of youth, including HIV prevention, care, and treatment.

Through its Research to Practice Initiative, FHI works to ensure that evidence-based research findings and best practices are incorporated into reproductive health service delivery programs.

Sustainable health service delivery: FHI conducts economic research to help developing country health services implement economically sustainable programs that meet men and women's needs, including through the Frontiers Project and the Horizons Project in partnership with the Population Council.

Preventing maternal death: FHI assists developing country governments and health organizations generate and implement strategies to improve maternal and infant care at every level of health delivery systems. We provide technical assistance to Columbia University's Averting Maternal Death and Disability (AMDD) Program, which contributes to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity by strengthening health systems through expanding equitable access to good quality emergency services.

Under the 10-year (1995-2005) Contraceptive Technology and Family Planning Research Project, funded by USAID, FHI conducted research and transfered skills to help developing country institutions determine best ways to provide improved reproductive health. The project provided global technical leadership in the generation and application of science-based knowledge for family planning and reproductive health programs.

YouthNet was a global, USAID-sponsored program to improve reproductive health and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among people 10 to 24 years old.
