Collaborative partnerships around the world
FHI works closely with a worldwide network of scientists, health providers, government and private sector programs, universities, non-governmental organizations, consumer advocacy groups, professional associations, and international organizations through research, technical assistance and capacity-building programs. Since 1971, FHI has worked in more than 100 countries.
Contraceptive evaluation and approval
FHI is a recognized leader in the design, implementation and analysis of research on contraceptive safety, efficacy, and acceptability. Our work includes protocol development for clinical trials, epidemiological studies, monitoring, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, biostatistical analysis, data management and report writing. FHI conducts clinical trials leading to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for new contraceptive technologies.
Improving service delivery
FHI conducts programmatic research to improve how family planning methods and services are provided. FHI researchers work closely with national and local programs to document practices that inhibit access and reduce the quality of care that women and men receive; to predict the impact of adding new methods and alternative ways of providing them; to determine the costs of providing family planning and reproductive health services; to identify effective ways to integrate family planning and STI/HIV prevention services; and to evaluate strategies to make better use of scarce resources.
Research to Practice Initiative
FHI conducts research to improve reproductive health around the world. The Research to Practice (RtoP) Initiative brings research-based evidence to bear on programs and policies.
Benefits and risks of contraceptive methods
FHI conducts epidemiological research on the long-term safety of contraceptives, including research on the association between method use and risk of STD/HIV. FHI works to ensure that all methods are appropriately evaluated for their long-term benefits and risks.
Information and training
FHI works to translate information into action: into programs that influence individual behavior and improve community health. Through publications, dissemination activities, training, specialized educational materials, and technical assistance, FHI helps strengthen the capacity of sister organizations around the world to improve health policies; ensure broad use of research findings in service delivery and education; and conduct effective health communication programs.
