As part of its efforts to promote evidence-based practice, FHI participates in the Implementing Best Practices (IBP) and Maximizing Access and Quality (MAQ) Initiatives. In addition, FHI is a regular contributor to the Cochrane Collaboration.
Implementing Best Practices
FHI is a founding member of the Implementing Best Practices (IBP) Initiative, and is currently serving as chair of the IBP Coordinating Committee until August 2005. The IBP Initiative, established in 1999, is a collaborative network of over 20 international partner agencies. The aim of the Initiative is to support the introduction, adaptation and use of evidence-based practices and build on experience and lessons learned to improve the quality of reproductive health services. The Initiative works through regional and country-level networks and programs to develop a knowledge-sharing culture focused on harmonizing approaches and reducing duplication of effort to translate evidence into practice.
Maximizing Access and Quality
FHI is currently serving as secretariat and contributing member of the Maximizing Access and Quality (MAQ) IUD Subcommittee. Established in 1984, the purpose of the MAQ Initiative is to bring together various partners to identify and implement practical, cost-effective, and evidence-based interventions aimed at improving both the access to and quality of family planning and reproductive health services. Through the MAQ IUD Subcommittee, FHI is working with donor agencies and service delivery organizations to develop an electronic resource of IUD-related tools and materials designed to meet the various needs of policymakers, program managers, clinic providers and other audiences.
Cochrane Collaboration
The Cochrane Collaboration is an international organization committed to helping people make informed health care decisions by preparing, maintaining, and promoting systematic reviews of the effects of health care interventions. FHI contributes to the Cochrane Collaboration by producing meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials of contraceptive methods to develop information in support of evidence-based medicine.
