The Tomorrow ProjectSM (Formerly The Children's Initiative) Responds to Families' Most Pressing Needs

Mother and childIn developing countries, nearly 16 million children die every year from preventable and treatable causes. Sixty percent of these deaths are from hunger and malnutrition.1 Children as young as 7 or 8 may be their household's primary healthcare providers, caring for sick parents or grandparents.

Worldwide, 93 million children of primary school age are not in school.2 Without education, many will never learn the skills that could help them escape the cycle of poverty. And each year, an estimated 700,000 to 2 million people, mostly women and children, are trafficked into forced labor and prostitution.3

Family Health International's The Tomorrow Project SM is addressing the needs of children and their families holistically, bringing to bear our hallmark of applying practical, evidence-based approaches to life-saving and support services. We have begun by identifying the difficulties families face in communities where we already have a presence. Critical needs may include:

  • Income-generating activities and economic strengthening
  • Protection from forced labor and prostitution
  • Psychosocial support
  • Healthcare
  • Shelter, clean water, and sanitation
  • Education and vocational training
  • Food and nutritional support

Through longstanding relationships with local governments and local partners, Family Health International is engaging stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to these needs.

Father and childrenBy empowering community members to take care of themselves and each other, Family Health International aims to help secure the wellbeing of future generations. We are disseminating our knowledge from community to community, documenting our processes and results, and widely sharing them to have the widest possible impact.

Support The Tomorrow Project SM

Family Health International is now working with three communities in Kenya and two in Ethiopia and Nepal. We have identified challenges vulnerable children and their families are facing and are working to lead community-based responses. To ensure success, we rely on the generosity and support of a wide range of partners, including local communities, organizations, individuals, and strategic partners.
