The study Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS) of the Mahendra Highway is the first round of the first BSS to be conducted in the western to far-western sector of the Mahendra highway route, the FHI project area of Nepal.
The Far-Western BSS was conducted among female sex workers and their clients in the six Terai districts. Work began on the project in September of 2002.
The goal of the BSS was threefold:
- To systematically measure and monitor HIV risk behavior trends among sex workers in far-western Terai districts
- To measure risk behaviors, which lead to HIV infection, as well as behaviors, such as condom use, which protect people against HIV
- To establish baseline data that can measure behavior changes over time
