This two-page document introduces Family Health International's efforts to deliver antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to HIV-positive persons in developing countries. It discusses these efforts in the context of comprehensive care programs.
The efforts are part of the Treatment and Care Initiative. The initiative is a unique effort to introduce ART into settings that offer HIV/AIDS preventionand care services. This initiative builds on FHI's solid foundation in prevention and care programming.
The first ART learning sites, supported by local USAIDmissions under the IMPACT Project, are in Ghana, Kenyaand Rwanda. The learning site approach is necessary nowbecause of limited resources for treatment and the need togather lessons quickly before scaling-up.
The programs in Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda are geographicin focus, allowing multiple entry points to care andtreatment. Each fosters a close collaboration betweennational, district and private sector entities and coordinatesactivities among clinical care facilities, community supportsystems, and NGOs.
