This issue of Snapshots from the Field examines the impact of home- and community-based care programs in Ethiopia.

Home- and Community-Based Care: Transforming Lives in Ethiopia highlights activities developed by FHI and implemented through the local nongovernmental organization Hiwot HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Support Organization (HAPCSO). The program is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The program began operating in September 2003. Since then, it has reached more than 3,100 people, including 1,500 orphans and vulnerable children. The program is a prime example of how communities can help people in low-resource areas manage their HIV-related illnesses in the community setting.

The program is also a compelling lesson in collaboration among a donor (USAID), a global implementing agency (FHI), a local implementing agency (HAPCSO), the local government (the Addis Ababa Health Bureau and the Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office) and local community institutions.
