AUGUST 2009 — The USAID APHIA II Coast and Rift Valley projects support improved, expanded, and sustainable HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care; tuberculosis (TB) services; and integrated reproductive health (RH) and family planning (FP) services. The projects aim to increase service access and use while promoting healthier behaviors among most-at-risk groups and the general population.

APHIA II Rift Valley is implementing an intervention targeting matatu transport system crews (drivers and conductors) in Nakuru town. This document details findings from formative research conducted to inform intervention design. Findings suggest that economic empowerment activites will help matatu crews use their incomes well and achieve their goals. HIV/AIDS prevention and care services should be friendly and accessible to the matatu crews in terms of location and time, and should enlist individuals and other media channels that matatu crews prefer to educate them on HIV/AIDS prevention and available care.
