OCTOBER 2007 — The IMPACT/Bangladesh Project managed by FHI supported USAID/Dhaka's strategy and the Bangladesh Ministry of Health's priorities by concentrating on groups most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Interventions worked to reduce vulnerability among high-risk groups, including female, male, and transgender sex workers and their clients; men who have sex with men; and intravenous drug users. FHI partnered with a wide variety of community-based organizations to support behavior change and care and support programs. FHI trained health providers in syndromic management of STIs and in HIV clinical management, conducted STI studies and behavioral and serological surveillance surveys, and supported voluntary HIV counseling and testing activities in three cities.

Other programs aimed to strengthen the national surveillance system and build the capacity of government and NGO partners, including PLHA support organizations. FHI helped to implement the Integrated Analysis and Advocacy (A2) Project, which provided synthesized national epidemiological and behavioral information and developed models that explored intervention alternatives, conducted the first in-country training of VCT center staff, and helped the government validate and introduce rapid test kits. FHI also provided input into the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the National Advocacy/BCC Strategy, National STI Guidelines, and the GFATM second-round proposal, organized regular donor meetings, and chaired USAID's AIDS Task Force meetings where partners met to coordinate activities and discuss lessons learned.
