This final report documents FHI/IMPACT work in Zambia from October 1997 through September 2007. FHI managed an investment of more than $17 million in IMPACT funds to address the HIV crisis in Zambia, providing direct services to hundreds of thousands of individuals and numerous communities. Working closely with the Government of Zambia, USAID, and local partners, IMPACT implemented three major projects:

  • SCOPE-OVC, which addressed the educational and psychosocial support needs of orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers
  • Psychosocial Support to HIV-Positive Children and Their Families, which provided recreation, education, and entertainment to HIV-positive children and their caregivers to improving each child's physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Corridors of Hope, which offered STI services and behavior change information to vulnerable communities (chiefly long-distance truck drivers and female sex workers), abstinence and be faithful messages for youth, and counseling and testing services

In some ways, these projects were very different from one another, but their lessons have all been incorporated into strategies and practices at national, district, and community levels and have strengthened Zambia's response to the challenges presented by HIV and AIDS.
