This final report documents FHI/IMPACT work in Guatemala from August 2003 to September 2005.
Through the IMPACT Project, FHI worked closely with the Guatemala's Ministry of Health and local NGOs to increase the availability of prevention and support services for the most vulnerable, particularly in Guatemala City and the Department of Izabal.
FHI/IMPACT strengthened local capacity in behavior change communication (BCC), voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), and syndromic management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The project also provided technical training for health and other service personnel and improved the infrastructure of facilities that provide VCT and STI services. In addition, the project mentored four local NGOs, helping them to improve their skills in project design and the development of BCC materials and to expand their work with vulnerable populations. Finally, IMPACT helped establish the country's first national STI training center in Guatemala City, where health professionals receive formal and practical training in STI/HIV/AIDS care and treatment.
