Palliative CareOCTOBER 2008 — Palliative care—the combination of measures that relieves suffering and improves quality of life for those facing life-threatening illness—begins from the point of diagnosis and continues through death and bereavement. Palliative care is one of the most important forms of care for individuals with active, progressive, or far-advanced illness. This document defines the need, explains the technical approach, and suggests illustrative activities for FHI country offices and implementing partners working toward the goal of providing palliative care for all chronically ill individuals and their families.

Prevention in the Care Setting Series

document coverJANUARY 2008 — Until recently, prevention efforts in healthcare settings in low-resource countries have targeted persons at risk of HIV infection. However, prevention is also crucial for HIV-positive people. Two FHI publications address this important topic: a guide for health managers on incorporating prevention in the healthcare setting, and a facilitator's manual and PowerPoint presentation on prevention for positives that quickly updates healthcare staff on this very important topic.

IMPACT: A Decade of Global Leadership and Innovation

IMPACT Project final report coverJULY 2007 — The Implementing AIDS Prevention and Care (IMPACT) project was a global USAID program implemented by Family Health International (FHI) and five partners. One of the world's largest and most ambitious HIV/AIDS programs, from 1997 to 2007 IMPACT provided comprehensive prevention, care, and treatment services while expanding the numbers of people and geographical areas covered by HIV interventions. This report summarizes some of IMPACT's key accomplishments and interventions from its inception to its closing and suggests some possible paths for the way forward. This report is also available in French.

Adherence Support Worker Training Materials

Adherence Support Worker Training Materials cover imageJUNE 2007 — This two-week adherence support worker course teaches community volunteers to work alongside nurses and doctors. ASWs learn to interact with patients in clinical, community, and home settings where they provide HIV education, treatment support, and ART adherence counseling. They also are trained to participate in the referral network and to reengage treatment defaulters. The material includes technical information and techniques for relationship building and counseling. Modules include didactic sessions, role plays, and group exercises. A CD with PowerPoint presentations is included in the facilitator's guide.

Pediatric AIDS in Africa coverOCTOBER 2006 — The Handbook on Pædiatric AIDS in Africa is an accessible, practical tool for health professionals in developing countries who care for HIV-infected and -affected children. Written by the African Network for the Care of Children Affected by AIDS (ANECCA), the handbook was produced by FHI and is available in French and English.
