Prevention in the Care Setting

JANUARY 2008 — Until recently, prevention efforts in healthcare settings in low-resource countries have targeted persons at risk of HIV infection. However, prevention is also crucial for HIV-positive people. Two FHI publications address this important topic: a guide for health managers on incorporating prevention in the healthcare setting, and a facilitator's manual and PowerPoint presentation on prevention for positives that quickly updates healthcare staff on this very important topic.

Promising and Best Practices in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care for West and Central Africa
JANUARY 2008 — Available in French and English, this publication describes selected promising and best practices in behavior change communication, voluntary counseling and testing, reduction of sexually transmitted infections, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, care and treatment, advocacy for policy change, and community financing models for combating HIV/AIDS.

Health Facility Tools to Assess Preparedness for HIV Services Delivery, Including Antiretroviral Therapy

This process includes taking steps to ensure that the proper contacts are made, accurate data are gathered and used for program planning, and comprehensive program planning occurs. Adherence Support Worker Training Materials
JUNE 2007 — This two-week adherence support worker course teaches community volunteers to work alongside nurses and doctors. ASWs learn to interact with patients in clinical, community, and home settings where they provide HIV education, treatment support, and ART adherence counseling. They also are trained to participate in the referral network and to reengage treatment defaulters. The material includes technical information and techniques for relationship building and counseling. Modules include didactic sessions, role plays, and group exercises. A CD with PowerPoint presentations is included in the facilitator's guide.

AUGUST 2005 — Standard Operating Procedures for Antiretroviral Therapy is a guide for clinicians delivering antiretroviral therapy (ART) services at health facilities in low-resource settings. The report includes protocols for providing ART to adults and adolescents, adherence counseling and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). The online version includes customizable Microsoft Word documents for adapting the report to individual country needs.

The report's companion document, Tools for Establishing Referral Networks for Comprehensive HIV Care in Low-Resource Settings, provides a collection of premade referral forms and registers to help maintain accuracy, efficiency and consistency.
