Population: The Central Statistical Services (CSC), based on a survey carried out in 1996, puts the population of Messina at 19500. The Greater Messina Transitional Local Council, based on administrative records places the population at 26000. 4000 are Caucasians and 22000 are black. Of the entire population, females make up 65-70% of the population.

Informal Trade: There are about 450 people involved in informal trade. Some sell fruits and vegetables at the market, while yet others have stalls at the numerous flea markets.
Activities That Women Are Engaged In: Most women are involved in vending and running small Coca-Cola outlets called "Spazas" and they also sell drinks at the railway station. A large number are also employed as domestics in the low density suburbs or as bed maids at the hotels and lodges in Messina. A small number are employed in the Chinese and Indian retail outlets.
Activities That Girls Are Engaged In: Sex work and informal trading. The bars allow the young girls to get into the bar so many of them get picked up by patrons at the bars and shebeens.

A large majority of the informal settlements have 3-5 extra shacks called Mkuku's which the owners lease out.
There are only 1543 formal settlements in Messina, these being 2-3 bedroom houses (High income-95% of them are resided in by the White Inhabitants, while the remaining 5 % of the houses belong to the Indians and Customs/Immigration officials)
There are 5600 informal settlements, which are mostly 2-3 roomed houses that were built under the RDP project. They have clean water and Electricity with excellent reticulation. These are no longer being built because the Government could no longer find donors to help fund the project.
The Mkuku's are squatter like settlements built out of durawall or asbestos. The 5600 informal settlements are split into 5 "locations" (or sections):

- Extension 8
Sex Work
There are around 300 sex workers operating in Messina. They all reside in Messina but some carry out sex work at the Border with the Truckers at the Truck-inn located there and with the informal traders.
Sex Workers Hostels And Guest Houses:There are no sex worker hostels and guest- houses in Messina. Most of the sex workers in Messina stay in the RDP houses or rent Mkukus from the owners of the RDP houses.
