Preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV remains a major public health challenge worldwide, especially in developing countries, home to more than 95 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS globally.

These PMTCT baseline assessment tools were conceived with the vision of PMTCT programs integrated into maternal and child health (MCH) clinics, with MCH service providers and counselors as the backbone of the services.

The six tools contained in this publication can be used alone where a primary level facility has no maternity services or a provincial level facility has no antenatal clinics.

We expect the primary users of the tools to be PMTCT managers and planners at the national, district, and facility levels, as part of PMTCT start-up and/or expansion activities.

This document is a living one; it will be updated from time to time, especially given that PMTCT is a rapidly changing area.  You can adapt the tool by downloading it as a MS Word file.

The six tools are:

  • PMTCT Prenatal Care Assessment Tool
  • PMTCT Maternity Tool (labor, delivery, and postnatal)
  • PMTCT Laboratory Assessment Tool
  • Inventory Checklist
  • PMTCT Health Provider Assessment Tool
  • PMTCT Client Exit Interview
