Funded by the U.K. Department for International Development, the Strengthening Nigeria's Response to HIV/AIDS (SNR) Program aims to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria by increasing the capacity of the public and private sectors and civil society organizations to respond to HIV and AIDS at the national, state and local levels. SNR works in the states of Benue, Cross River, Enugu, the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna and Nasarawa.
Jointly implemented by Family Health International, ActionAID International Nigeria, and Voluntary Service Overseas, SNR has achieved various successes:
- Supported state action committees on AIDS (SACAs), state-level partners, PLHA, faith-based organizations, and private sector entities in conducting in-depth assessments of technical and managerial capacity to coordinate and deliver an effective HIV/AIDS response at the state level
- Supported the development of strategies to strengthen SACAs' coordination role in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services at the community level
These achievements support SNR's objectives:
- Build the capacity of SACAs to coordinate an effective, state-led, multisectoral response to HIV and AIDS
- Improve access in high-impact areas to effective community services for people vulnerable to HIV and AIDS
- Reduce HIV- and AIDS-related stigma and promote the rights of vulnerable people
- Strengthen local leadership to mobilize and sustain a multisectoral response at the community level
- Apply evidence- and rights-based lessons to program activities and the broader national response
FHI and its partners are also engaging the media, trade unions and faith-based organizations in this effort.
