HIVNET was established in 1993 by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to conduct domestic and international multi-center trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of promising interventions to prevent sexual, perinatal, and parenteral transmission of HIV. In 2000 the
HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) took over the administration and management of ongoing HIVNET studies. However, funding for some studies begun under HIVNET and other project related activities will continue through September 2003.
FHI, as the International Master Contactor for HIVNET, provided central management services for the scientific, administrative, financial and regulatory aspects of international HIVNET studies in 13 field sites in 11 countries. FHI supported the development and implementation of behavioral, microbicides/barriers, perinatal, and vaccine studies.
FHI also provided scientific and leadership support for two HIVNET science working goups: Microbicides/Barriers Science Working Group and Perinatal Science Working Group. These two working groups produced more than half of HIVNET's 28 study protocols.
